A 10 mile circular walk from The Wenallt and looping around Craig Llysfaen

900 calories
This walk begins in the Wenallt, a 44 hectare area of designated ancient woodland which is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest and proceeds across Craig Llanishen before looping around Craig Llysfaen.
The route is muddy and there are several hills to navigate but it's got some fantastic views and also if the weather is dry, a great little picnic spot along the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway footpath.
An ex-boyfriend of mine actually introduced me to this ruin around 15 years ago. Back then you could see a lot more of the thick walls and outline of the castle, however, now it's completely covered with thick bramble bushes and impossible to spot what was once there. It's accessed via a path from the back of The Travellers Rest but it is private land and would be trespassing.
You will walk along a footpath that runs just under the ruin of Castell Morgraig. It’s a little known fortress built in the 13th century when it straddled the border between Welsh Senghennydd and English Glamorgan, the castle overlooked Cardiff and guarded the important route from the city to the valleys.
I parked in the first Wenallt car park - CF14 6TQ. It is a small car park that can fill up quickly, there are other places that you can pull in to park along the road. Please remember to park considerately
