Crug Hywel or Table Mountain sits in the southern part of the Black Mountains above Crickhowell, I’m guessing it gets its name because of the slanted, flat-topped peak which is so very distinctive.
Its Welsh name is Crug Hywel translated to ‘Hywel’s Fort’. It is unsure whether this refers to Hywel Dda or Hywel the Good, King of all Wales, who kept a stronghold here in the 10th century, or a more local King, Hywel ap Rhys of Morgannwg.
This is a really beautiful 4.5 mile loop from Crickhowell and you can always reward yourself for your efforts with a nice cold pint in one of the many lovely establishments in the Town!
