OS MAPS & TIPS

How it all works

OS Map

I have walked every route on this site and for each one have plotted the walk on an OS Map. If you click on the link displayed at the end of each page, it will open the route in the app on your phone.

The app is free to download and in all honesty, you don’t need to subscribe as the free features are pretty much enough for the novice walker.  It’s a fantastic  app though and you can literally follow the routes in the same way you would follow a sat nav.

If you’re going to be walking regularly then I would recommend getting the paid version. The maps are a lot more detailed, you can download the maps in case you lose signal and you can even create your own routes. It costs around £30 a year.

The app does use a lot of the battery on your phone so make sure you take a power bank with you.

What’s in my bag

  • Two litres of water. I use a hydration bladder which is so much easier and means I don’t have to stop and take my bag off every time I want a drink, nor do I have to carry a bottle in my hand.
  • First Aid Kit. Make sure to include things like Compeed blister plasters, painkillers, triangular and standard bandages, antiseptic wipes, pen knife, tick removal kit and waterproof plasters.
  • Power bank. I mentioned it above but it really is important. You don’t want to  be stuck somewhere without a phone or any idea of where you are.
  • Extra clothing. Suitable for the conditions you’re walking in – waterproofs, hat, gloves, fleece, spare socks, base layers, shorts etc.
  • Navigation. Make sure you have OS Maps downloaded on your phone, have a paper map and compass – you should definitely learn how to use these.
  • Food / snacks. Depending on the length of walk, you could end up burning a lot of calories. Make sure you bring some food with you to keep you going!
  • Extra equipment. Group shelter, emergency whistle, torch, dry bags.

What’s DO I WEAR

  • Layers. Sweat wicking base layers are a must, followed by a decent mid layer and then a coat. Depending on the weather I’ll either be in one of my down jackets or waterproofs. Check out Keela, Highlander, Rab and Montane.
  • Legwear. I mostly wear leggings, I prefer the freedom of movement with them, they aren’t the best if they get wet so always carry some waterproof pull on trousers. A lot of people wear waterproof trousers and there are some great brands out there. Check out ACAI and Montane.
  • Sensible footwear. Hiking boots all the way, they provide a lot of stability when out on the hills. I have shoes that I wear for more local walks. Make sure they’re waterproof and try them on before you buy as I wear a half size bigger in hiking shoes. My favourite footwear brands are AKU and Keen.
  • Socks. I suffer with blisters and have tried loads of different hiking socks and find the best ones for me are CEP compression socks – an absolute game changer!  I then wear a second paid over the top either merino wool or bamboo. My favourites are Darn Tough, ACAI and Bridgedale.
  • Sunscreen. Even if doesn’t look that sunny outside, you will be surprised how easy it is to burn, even when cloudy.
  • Insect repellent. Only for certain months of the year, but I have lost count the number of times I’ve been bitten by horseflies. Midges are also horrendous in the summer evenings so consider carrying a midge net.
