The Blorenge

MORE INFORMATION

Dominating the skyline above Abergavenny, The Blorenge is a mountain of big views and fascinating stories. This circular walk starts from the scenic shores of Keeper’s Pond - a popular spot for sunrise photography and wild dips - before following the dramatic edge of the hill across wide, open moorland.

One of the highlights on the route is The Punchbowl, a hidden glacial hollow tucked beneath the slopes of the mountain. Peaceful, sheltered and rich with wildlife, it feels like a secret oasis carved into the wildness above.

Beyond the beauty, the Blorenge is shaped by a remarkable industrial past. Criss-crossing tramways, quarry remains and old workings hint at the days when the mountain helped drive South Wales’ iron and coal industries - now recognised as part of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Near the summit you’ll find a touching memorial to Foxhunter, the famous showjumping horse who won Britain’s first post-war Olympic gold medal in 1952 with Sir Harry Llewellyn. This windy vantage point is a favourite for pausing to admire the views across Abergavenny, the Usk Valley and toward the Sugar Loaf and Skirrid.

With open skies, rich heritage and a varied trail that’s rewarding without being too technical, The Blorenge offers a brilliant day out for walkers wanting something just a bit different.
