The Sugar Loaf

MORE INFORMATION

The Sugar Loaf is one of Abergavenny’s most recognisable mountains - a beautiful, conical peak offering sweeping views across Bannau Brycheiniog, the Black Mountains and deep into the Usk Valley. It’s a favourite for good reason: a proper mountain day without the technical difficulty.

This circular walk begins with a gentle wander beneath the trees of St Mary’s Vale, where the river chatters beside the path and sunlight filters through the branches. Visit in spring and you’ll be treated to a spectacular bluebell display, transforming the valley into a vivid wash of purple and creating one of the most magical woodland scenes in South Wales.

Leaving the woods behind, the route climbs gradually onto open ground, revealing ever-bigger views with every step. The summit ridge curves upwards to the pointed top - the perfect perch to pause, breathe and soak in the landscape stretching out in every direction.

Geologically speaking, Sugar Loaf’s striking shape is the work of ancient volcanic activity, which sculpted the distinctive peak that now dominates the skyline. Today, it forms part of a National Trust landscape, looked after for everyone to enjoy.

A walk of contrasts - peaceful woodland, airy heights and unforgettable panoramas - Sugar Loaf is a must-do for anyone exploring Abergavenny’s great outdoors.
